We were getting
ready to leave one village which was much further out in the sticks than most of them,
when someone tapped (not exactly gently) on my shoulder. He appeared a "very
nicely dressed" boy of about 10 or 11, holding the gift he had received.
He spoke to me in his
language which, Christy, a missionary in Burkina (from Ghana) standing nearby, told me he
had just said, "THANK YOU VERY MUCH!" And then he asked me for my address
which is what many people in Africa do when they meet a white skinned person because they
often hope that you will help them come to America and live where they have heard that the
streets are paved with gold. (They don't know yet about green cards.)
It's not always an unreasonable request.....because some do get to come here.
I tried to take his
picture, but my camera malfunctioned. I think now that it was perhaps because God
didn't want me to have the picture of an angel's face to stare at. My friend.
Lisa, took this picture from the other side of the car ...... which I treasure greatly!!

Please note this young
man's VERY CLEAN white pants.....and his rich deep blue shirt which was decorated with
beautiful gold appliques and reminded me of a rodeo type of shirt. The amazing thing
to me was that you don't see people over there wearing (bright) white clothes of any
kind.....because they wouldn't stay white for very long at all in the dust that is
EVERYWHERE!! |
I believe that God had
sent an angel to me to personally says thanks for thinking to go to Africa and deliver
these gifts as well as for packing some to send them just before Thanksgiving of that
year.
Also, one day in the middle of a shoebox distribution I looked up to
see a beautiful complete semi-circle rainbow. The man in charge of the distribution
was standing next to me and exclaimed, "That NEVER happens!!!"
The amazing thing about that was that there was definitely not a drop
of rain anywhere near that desert like place.
God has his own creative ways of saying THANK YOU which stay with me for a
very long time. THANKS SO MUCH, LISA for thinking to snap this picture!!
